While our average life expectancy is increasing, our average health span does not appear to be improving at the same rate.
Fifty per cent of those aged over 65 have more than one chronic health condition. Meanwhile, 80% of those aged over 75 have more than one chronic health condition.
So, what can you do to maximise your chances of aging well?
Maintain physical activity
One of the best ways to improve your health span is by engaging in physical activity. If you are able, aim for 7,000 to 9,000 steps per day. Taking the stairs each day is a great way to boost your daily step count. If you are less physically capable, even a small walk around the block each day will have a positive impact on physical health.
It’s never too late in life to start engaging in regular physical activity. Exercise for seniors can have many benefits. Research indicates that improvements can be made to a person’s frailty through regular physical activity, no matter how old they are. Strength training can play a vital role in maintaining bone and muscle health. This, in turn, can help you maintain your balance and flexibility.
Keep your brain active
It is important to remain engaged with the world. Activities such as puzzles are great for mental stimulation. However, activities that involve interacting with others, such as playing chess, are even more beneficial. Learning new skills is another great way to keep mentally active. Keeping your brain healthy and active and interacting with others can help reduce your risk of cognitive impairment and dementia.
Have a purpose
No matter your age, it’s essential to have a reason to get up in the morning. This could be your work, looking after your grandchildren or a hobby. Having a clear purpose in life helps you to remain physically and mentally active as you age.
Maintain a nutritious diet
As we get older, maintaining a balanced diet can be challenging. However, healthy eating for seniors is essential. Neglecting your diet can negatively affect your health and wellbeing. There are various ways you can maintain a healthy and nutritious diet as you age. These include:
• Eating home-cooked meals as much as possible: Takeaway foods are often high in fat and sugar.
• Avoiding processed foods
• Eating plants and vegetables of various colours: Eat a selection of food in a variety of colours each day and each week
• Reducing salt and sugar intake
• Maintaining a balance: Treats like chocolate and alcohol are ok from time to time. However, they should be enjoyed in moderation.
• Eating foods containing healthy fats: Examples include nuts, seeds, avocados and extra virgin olive oil. Including more of these in your diet can help improve your gut health within days.
Taking care of your body, mind and diet can give you the best chance of living as well as possible for as long as possible.
