It’s clear the majority of older Australians want to live out their remaining years at home. However, to do so they require appropriate support. It’s essential this support is available when they need it. More than 120,000 Australians are currently waiting to be assessed for at-home support, a figure that continues to grow each month.
There are also 87,000 people who have been assessed and approved for a home care package but are waiting to receive one. It’s a trend that is only expected to worsen in the immediate term. So what’s behind this trend and what can be done?
What is the issue?
Despite the government pledging to reduce the waiting list for home care packages it has only increased. Earlier this year, the government delayed sweeping aged care reforms which were due to be implemented in July until November. This means that 83,000 extra home care packages which were due to be released in July have been delayed along with the rest of the changes. Experts say it’s unclear why these packages were held up alongside the rest of the changes. This is because many aged care providers are willing and able to provide a greater level of support, if given the necessary resources.
What is the impact of this?
Providers say urgent action is needed. They say receiving appropriate care is key to maintaining quality of life as we age. They warn older people can quickly deteriorate if they are not receiving the level of support they need. Missed services can mean the difference between someone staying safely in their own home or having to enter residential care earlier than expected. The longer delays continue, the greater the risk of health decline, increased hospital admissions, and additional pressure on families already stretched to provide informal care and emotional support.
What can be done?
Aged care providers are asking the government to immediately fund more home care packages. They are calling for 20,000 additional packages to be immediately released. They are also calling for the “front-loading” of the 83,000 packages due to be released in November. The government says they are aware the demand for aged care services is growing. That’s why they say the home care package has doubled in size in recent years. But sector leaders argue growth has not kept pace with demand. They believe that real solutions require both funding and workforce development, not just additional announcements.
